5 Signs You Have A Slow Metabolism And What To Do About It
Most of my clients come to me because despite eating the foods they think they should be eating and exercising often, they are gaining weight. Which doesn't make sense at all right? Eating less, exercising more, but the scale is going in the wrong direction? It could be a sign that your metabolism is not working efficiently.
What is the metabolism & what does it do ?
Despite what most people think, your metabolism is not a calorie burner (that is part of what it does). Your metabolism is actually a complicated system of hormones. Hormones are the bodies little messengers that tell it what to do. Like burn the calories in the meal you just ate, or store those calories as fat. Most often when we think we have a "slow metabolism", it really means that our metabolic hormones are out of balance. The metabolism is the chemical processes inside of our cells that are necessary to maintain life.

Part of what your metabolism does it that is converts what you eat and drink into energy. When your metabolism is not working optimally (because your hormones are out of tune) , your body cannot work the way it's suppose to. For ease of understanding, a slow metabolism means that the metabolism is not working to its full potential. Your body is a smarty pants, and it always trying to communicate with you through symptoms. Symptoms are not the actual problem, but instead are warning signs from your body that something is not quite right. Check out the symptoms below to see if you can relate to any of these.
Symptoms of a Slow Metabolism
1. Weight Gain
One of the biggest signs of a slow metabolism is unexplained weight gain. If you have been exercising and watching what you eat but are still noticing your weight going up, your metabolism could be to blame. It's especially common to notice this weight gain around your middle, belly fat.
2. Difficulty Losing Weight
Weight loss resistance, or the inability to lose any weight even with diets and exercise. Maybe even routines and diets that worked for you in the past, may have zero effect on your current weight loss efforts.
3. Always Tired
You may be getting a good night's sleep but still waking up and feeling tired the whole day. With a slow metabolism, your body is burning energy at a slower rate which can cause you to feel tired more frequently.
4. Decrease in Sex Drive
When your metabolism is slow, your hormones are out of balance. Hormones are responsible for getting you in the mood and making sure all of the parts are functioning properly, if you know what I mean.
5. Carb Cravings (aka Sugar Cravings)
This could be a sign that your blood sugar levels are out of balance. Cravings of sugar and carbohydrates could be a sign of insulin resistance which is a key playing in slowing down your metabolism.
I think I have a slow metabolism... So what can I do about it?
Maybe you are like me and have experience with some of these symptoms. It could be a sign that your metabolism is slow. But don't worry, a slow metabolism is not something that is set in stone, the good news is that you can change it!
Contrary to popular thought, improving your metabolism to lose weight is much more than just calories in vs calories out (more on this in an upcoming blog post). The quality of food you eat and the lifestyle choices that you make send signals to your body that tell it what to do. If you put the right type of fuel in, your body will respond by running optimally.
What is the right type of fuel? The simple answer is anything that is grown from the earth or comes from an animal is what your body knows best. Fake, processed foods are laden with chemicals & hormones that confuse our body, which does not allow for optimal metabolism.
Start by removing processed foods from your diet! Your hormones and metabolism will thank you!
