Matcha green tea is a type of green tea that is made from grinding up young tea leaves into a bright green powder. The powder is then mixed with water to create a tea drink, or can be combined with milk or non-dairy milk for a latte.
Matcha leaves are grown in the shade increases the amount of chlorophyl in the leaves. This contributes to its bright green color and its abundance of nutrients. Matcha contains a category of antioxidants called catechins, especially EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate). EGCG has been shown to have cancer fighting effects, and other benefits like preventing heart disease, type 2 diabetes and encouraging weight loss.
Matcha green tea is also a course of caffeine. An 8oz serving of matcha tea contains 70mg of caffeine, which is slightly less than a cup of drip coffee. Matcha also contains the amino acid L-Theanine, which allows a slow release of caffeine into the blood stream and provides a calming effect.
